- In 1945, the red feather was chosen as the national symbol for Community Chests, as it was already used by many local chapters. Community Chests were fundraising organizations designed to collect money from the general public in an effort to aid community organizations and causes. Wearing red feather pins were a sign that you had donated to the Community Chest and were committed to giving. Community Chests would later become the United Way.
