AUTHENTIC DOGON GRANARY SHUTTER — Bandiagara Escarpment, Mali
FIELD COLLECTED 2001 WITH IN-SITU PHOTOS & COA — 12" X 14" X 3/4". This is the EXACT shutter shown in Photo #2 still in the adobe granary wall before owner removed it to sell it to me. Side-by-side match photo included in this listing.
FIELD PROVENANCE:Collected by me personally in 2001 from a family granary on the Bandiagara Escarpment, Mali. Legally acquired before current export restrictions. This is NOT a newly made reproduction.
CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:The 4 figures are seated Ancestors / Nommo - the primordial water spirits and first ancestors in Dogon belief. Carving them on the granary shutter protects the millet harvest inside and invokes fertility and abundance. Males and females shown seated with hands in the air, large heads and stylized ovoid bellies representing prosperity. Herringbone / chevron border at top and bottom is a water and earth symbol making the threshold sacred.
CONDITION:100% original and untouched as found in 2001. Original hand-forged iron staples intact. Stable age cracks, heavy encrusted patina, untouched surface. No modern repairs, cleaning, or restoration. See macro photos for surface detail.
