During the mid-century era (roughly the 1950s through the 1970s), artisan workshops in Florence, Italy, specialized in producing these highly popular decorative panels.
They typically featured high-quality prints of famous Renaissance, Baroque, or Flemish Old Master paintings (like this village festival scene by the circle of David Teniers the Younger) adhered directly to shaped wooden panels.
The workshop would then decorate the borders by hand using gold leaf or metallic paint (gilt) alongside characteristic red, cream, or green accents and intricate scrolling punchwork motifs.
