Vintage French Table Lamp, Deschuyteneur, Malachite Effect Ceramic and Brass — France, circa 1970 The story and character of the piece
The French lamp houses of the 1960s and 1970s understood that the base was the object — the shade merely its complement. Deschuyteneur, one of the respected names in French decorative lighting of the period, produced bases that took their cues from the great decorative traditions: the ceramic urn on a brass plinth, the column lamp, the figural base. Their pieces appeared in the well-furnished apartments of the period and have held their value precisely because they were made with the seriousness of objects intended to last.
This lamp is French, circa 1970, by Deschuyteneur, the base a ceramic urn form in deep teal green with a malachite-effect glaze — the surface swirling between emerald, viridian and deep green in the manner of polished malachite stone, a technique the French ceramic workshops of the period had refined into one of their signature finishes. The urn sits on a stepped square brass plinth, its shoulder and neck fitted with brass collars that connect it to the brass lamp fitting above. The original cream shade with its gilt-trimmed rim is included and complements the warm brass of the fittings. The combination of the deep teal ceramic and the warm gold brass is one of those pairings that works in almost any interior — warm enough for a traditional room, confident enough for a contemporary one.
