A handsome vintage hand-carved wooden lidded vessel in a low, rounded "UFO" or squat-pumpkin shape, turned and carved from a rich, warm-toned hardwood (possibly mahogany or a similar tropical hardwood). The exterior is covered in an incised, hand-carved folk-art design featuring large stylized flowers (peony or rose-like blooms), bunches of grapes/berries, leaves, and what appears to be a long-necked bird or crane motif worked into the design — all set against the natural wood grain, which shows beautifully through the warm reddish-brown finish. The domed lid lifts off and is topped with a substantial hand-turned wooden finial knob with ring-turned banding, sitting on a wide flat collar that nests into the body.
The interior of the base bowl is left as plain turned wood (unfinished/natural), showing the lovely turning rings and grain — practical for use as a trinket bowl, candy/nut dish, or potpourri holder, while the carved exterior makes it equally suited as a decorative display piece. The base is faintly marked with a number "3" and shows scattered small nail/peg holes and light handling marks from age and use, along with a faint partial pencil or ink mark that's not clearly legible.
This style of deep, all-over floral/relief incised carving on turned wood is commonly seen in vintage folk-art treen pieces, often hand-made as tourist ware or craft pieces from the mid-20th century — the look would suit Mexican, Central American, or Mediterranean folk-carving traditions, though no country-of-origin mark is present, so I'd describe it generally as "folk art" unless you can confirm origin.
Good vintage condition with honest wear consistent with age and handling. Light surface scratches and small nail/peg holes to underside (not structural, cosmetic only). Finish shows some unevenness/lighter patches from handling and age, especially around the body. Lid fits snugly and sits well. No cracks or splits noted. Please examine all photos closely as part of your purchase decision.
