BUCK’S STATEMENT:
Imagine stepping into a dimly lit tiki lounge during the golden age of America’s fascination with the South Pacific. Bamboo-lined walls, carved wooden masks, glowing lanterns and the sounds of island music created a world far removed from everyday life. Tropical drinks arrived in colorful ceramic mugs, each one adding to the illusion of an exotic island getaway. With its sculpted Easter Island-inspired face and beautifully mottled green glaze, this old Hawaii-marked tiki mug recalls an era of tropical vacations, souvenir shops, Polynesian restaurants and evenings spent dreaming of paradise.
This distinctive ceramic Moai-style tiki mug features deeply sculpted facial details, prominent eyebrows, an elongated nose and rounded ears. Its glossy avocado-green glaze is accented with reddish-brown speckling, giving the surface a wonderfully earthy appearance. Measuring approximately 4 3/4 inches tall with an opening around 3 inches across, the mug features a glazed interior and the word “Hawaii” impressed into its underside. The exact manufacturer and age have not been established. The piece displays nicely, with no obvious major chips or cracks visible in the photographs. Whether displayed among a collection of vintage tiki mugs, added to a home cocktail bar or enjoyed as a nostalgic piece of Hawaiian souvenir culture, this charming ceramic vessel brings a little island character wherever it goes.
