Hand carved Inuit soapstone sculpture depicting a seated figure in a hooded parka, hands folded at the chest. Grey black stone with natural veining. Stands 4.5 inches high.
The base carries the original gold "Canadian Eskimo Art" tag along with a hand scratched disc number, E9-1513, identifying the carver under Canada's mid-20th century Inuit identification system. The E9 district covers the Baffin Island region, including Cape Dorset (Kinngait), historically the leading center of Inuit soapstone carving. A second inscription is scratched into the base as well, possibly a signature, that I have not been able to clearly decipher.
Condition, shown clearly in photos:
• A crack runs through the stone down the back
• A small chip near the eye and brow area on the face
