Vintage Italian 19-Opening Ceramic Tulipiere – Sculptural Pyramid Cluster Bud Vase

Italian Art Pottery | White & Lime Green | Hand-Assembled Ceramic | Mid-to-Late 20th Century

An exceptionally charming and architecturally distinctive vintage Italian ceramic tulipiere, featuring an elaborate pyramidal arrangement of 19 individual bud-vase openings, united into a single sculptural flower holder.

Finished in luminous glossy white glaze with delicate apple-green rims, this unusual Italian pottery piece blends traditional European flower-arranging forms with the playful sculptural character associated with mid-century decorative ceramics.

Its design is immediately captivating: rounded, bulbous miniature vessels rise in tightly grouped tiers, each with a slender neck and gently flared opening. The contrasting green rims emphasize the rhythmic repetition of the individual vessels, creating a harmonious composition that is equally attractive with or without flowers.

Historical Background – The Tulipiere Tradition

The tulipiere has a fascinating history rooted in European decorative arts.

Multi-opening flower holders became especially fashionable in the Netherlands during the late 17th century. Elaborate Delftware flower pyramids were commissioned for aristocratic households, including the court of William III and Queen Mary II.

These extraordinary ceramic creations allowed individual flowers to be displayed in carefully arranged, dramatic compositions. Their tiered architectural forms were both functional and decorative, reflecting the importance of flowers in European interiors.

This vintage Italian interpretation reimagines that historical tradition on a more intimate scale, replacing elaborate painted ornament with a beautifully restrained combination of white and pale green.

Design & Craftsmanship

The construction consists of 19 closely grouped ceramic vessels, assembled into a distinctive pyramid-like arrangement.

Each rounded vessel features a narrow neck, flared mouth and individually accented green rim. The glossy white glaze reveals subtle variations in the underlying ceramic forms, giving the piece the organic character of handmade pottery.

Particularly appealing details include:

* 19 individual flower openings

* Unusual tiered, pyramidal cluster construction

* Glossy white glazed ceramic

* Hand-applied pale lime-green rim accents

* Rounded miniature vase forms with flared mouths

* Visible artisan construction and glazing characteristics

* Handwritten “ITALY” country-of-origin marking on the underside

* A striking sculptural presentation suitable for floral display or decorative collecting

Decorative Appeal

With its repeated geometric forms and delicate green detailing, this tulipiere is a wonderful accent for an Italian-inspired interior, traditional European décor, cottage-style setting or eclectic vintage collection.

Display it with fresh-cut flowers, miniature roses, spring blossoms, greenery or individual floral stems to create an abundant centerpiece.

Even without flowers, its unusual composition makes it a distinctive ceramic sculpture.
