Beautiful authentic vintage pair of traditional Ainu Folk Art Dolls mounted on a stained wooden display stand - Circa 1960s (Showa Period)
This coupe represents the indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido of Japan. This set has the red and gold metallic foil tourism seal from the Hokkaido tourism Association - this dates this piece to mid century Japanese domestic travel boom of the 60s and 70s.
Lets talk about the figures....
1 - The male is in full textured beard and hair wrap and wears a striking red ceremonial vest layer over a geometrically patterned robe and is holding a traditional hunting spear with a miniature sood sword strapped to his hip - along with a caught fish.
2 - The female features a traditional facial markings this is depicted on the lips and a matching patterned geometric headwrap, she is holding a delicate sprig of faux white lily of the valley flowers
A bit of history...
During the post war Showa period - and accelerated greatly by the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics - tourisms surged across Japan. Artisan throughout Hokkaido produced tradition Mingei (folk crafts) for travelers as keepsakes. They showcase distinct clothing styles, facial designs and hunting motifs historically unique to the indigenous Ainu
