Vintage Miniature Amish Hand Made Melon / Buttocks Basket with God\'s Eye Ends:
$15.00

From the heart of the
Pennsylvania Dutch farming communities
nestled among the rolling hills of
Lancaster County PennsylvaniaOffered for sale:A wonderful example of Amish basketry in the form of a miniature melon or buttocks basket with a beautifully rustic, primitive aesthetic.Miniature baskets are highly collectible among folk art and farmhouse decor enthusiasts because of the intense skill required to weave at a small scale. This basket is a vintage piece most likely made between the 1950s and 1980s.Characteristics of this type of \"God’s Eye\" Weave:The distinct woven diamond pattern where the handle meets the rim is called a God\'s Eye.This is a hallmark reinforcement technique used by traditional Pennsylvania basket makers to lock the hoop and rim together securely.Melon/Buttocks Style:This specific ribbed shape is historically known as a melon, egg, or buttocks basket.Amish communities frequently wove these in miniature sizes as decorative pieces, children\'s toys, or small functional holders for items like eggs.Material and Construction:The basket is made using split oak or ash reeds with heavy, rigid ribs.Traditional Amish weavers rely on thick, durable materials rather than fine, delicate splits, prioritizing utility and structural strength.Lack of Signature:True to Amish custom, the bottom of the basket features no stamps, signatures, or maker\'s marks—only natural scuffs and wear from use.The split reeds show a lovely, light golden-amber tone. The fibers and edges of the split oak are remarkably crisp, clean, and tight, showing minimal fraying or brittleness. The dark spots on the bottom appear to be surface scuffs or light handling marks. It is structurally intact with no broken horizontal weavers or snapped vertical ribs, the \"God\'s Eye\" wrapping has not unraveled, nor does the rim have splits.Approximate measurements:Height from the bottom of the basket to the top of the handle: 4 and 1/4 inchesHeight at the side: 2 and 3/8 inchesWidth: 4 and 1/4 inchesLength: 4 and 3/4 inchesPlease review all the photographs carefully, as they really are the best description, to determine if this sweet little basket meets the criteria to join your collection. If you have questions, please send me a message through and I will reply as quickly as I ship the next business day after notification of payment from a
smoke-free and pet-free home
in Lancaster County Pennsylvania.Always happy to combine shipping where items can be mailed together you for considering my listing :)
