Hey gang, we're back and pleased to offer our friends on an opportunity to take home my Holy Grail, this 1991 Trek 990 vintage mountain bike. Considered a "Competition Race Mountain Bike" back bike in its heyday. I'm thinning my collection of vintage road and mountain bikes, though be it slowly, as it is a painful endeavor, as each and everyone of my bikes means something to me in one way or another, just like my dogs do LOL. I am the original owner, so by default this is a one owner bike. She's been with me for 35 years. This bike was a graduation gift to me by my parents. Purchased in Los Gatos California in around 1991 (I graduated high school in 1990), I just remember it was after my graduation. This has been down in my parents garage since I left for college, in 1995. I only just brought it back to where I live now this Christmas to be w/ the rest of its cousins, brothers, sisters etc. Lets detour from going down memory lane and get to the details.Yes, many call this a grail bike, as it represents a time in the mountain bike industry/history where things were changing and changing fast. It wasnt long after this bikes release that we started seeing more and more bikes being made out of aluminum and coming out of the box w/ suspension. Oh the early/mid 90s where a great time to be alive and into bikes (especially if you likes anodized purple and blue!). Innovations in frame material and suspension were coming out faster than you could break a set of Kooka cranks, and were either ahead of their time, ahead of their time for one year until the nest best deadly innovation was released, or pure insanity that in hindsight you cant help but thinking "What were they thinking?!" LOL. I just realized I went down memory lane again. Ok, sorry.As I sit here beside my trusty ol' steer, I find myself puzzled. Im going through all the photos I took of the bike this morning (which I have MANY MANY more of I can send upon request) and looking at the 1991 Trek Catalog online in preparation of listing it. Something isnt jiving w/ the catalog I found online. My bike has a True Temper OX Ultra II Chromoly Double Butted Frame Tube decal on the seat post tube. However the online 1991 catalog shows that it came with True Temper O.D. Heat Treated ATB Cro-Moly Main Tubes. I'm not sure what to say about that really. The bike is lugged, 2 on the head tube, 1 at the bottom bracket shell, and one at the top tube/seat stay/seat post tube intersection where the seat post collar is. The bike originally had a ridged fork on it but I soon after purchasing put this 1st gen Rock Shox on it. I have since lost the original fork. The stock fork was a Cro-Moly Tange Super Big Fork. I may have changed something else for some reason, but I cant remember its been so long ago, and I've been through sooooo many bikes.FRAME: Read above. Color is said to be Black and Conch. Kind of a salmonie/reddish/orange color

BRAKE LEVERS: Shimano XT, BL-M733 (one has wear from something and needs black spray paint touch up)
SHIFTERS: Shimano XT, 3x7 Thumb Shifters, I cant make out the M series of them, bad eyeballsOver all the bike shows very well for its age and being used. I only rode it a couple years now and then before I set off for college and the bike laid dormant in my parents garage until this Christmas, so thats approximately been sitting for 31 years. Little things need tickling, like it would look much better w/ a new pair of grips. The tires show signs of cracking, but I was very surprised that the tubes held air, but plan on replacing them too. The rear derailleur cable/housing as been changed to compression-less housing, but I think the rest are all original. Rear Brake cable is frayed at the end. Hard Anodized Side Walls of wheels show wear to the finish, but arent grooved or worn to a noteworthy degree, its just a superficial thing. There are some little chips/or scratches here and there, but really minor in comparison to how amazing the read of the paint work is. I can send more photos of the paint flaws, like scratches on the frame on the chain stays from chain suck, again, just mentioning, not life threatening. There are no note worthy cracks, dents, or notable issues w/ the frame. Now the fork, if I hold the lowers and pull up on the stem, they do go up and down pretty smoothly honestly, however they to just bottom out. I dont know whats inside, Im assuming at that time period it was just some elastomers in there, but consider them in need of attention. Im sorry Ive been so wordy, it is emotional for me. I used to take this bike up on the ski lifts in Big Bear California in the summer and ride down the slopes. Oh, heres a link to a pdf of the original 1991 Trek catalog.
