Beautiful and unusually designed vintage natural Capiz shell charger plates, offered as a matching pair of two large approximately 13-inch pieces.

Made in the Philippines, both plates retain their original Daffy’s Home Furnishings retail labels. The surviving labels identify the material as “Natural Capiz Serveware” and show an original suggested retail price of $38.00 per plate.

What makes this pair especially distinctive is the decorative treatment around the wide rims. Numerous round translucent inserts are incorporated into the Capiz shell design. When placed against light, the circular sections allow light and surrounding colors to show through, creating a beautiful jewel-like appearance.

This translucent circular-inlay design appears considerably less common than the solid, scalloped, metallic-rimmed, or mosaic-style Capiz chargers more frequently encountered on the secondary market. The combination of the large 13-inch size, natural Capiz shell construction, matching pair, and multiple translucent circular rim accents gives these pieces a particularly unusual decorative character.

Condition

Vintage pre-owned condition with age-appropriate surface wear, small marks, variations and natural irregularities associated with Capiz shell construction. Important Material Note

The round decorative inserts are visibly translucent and have a glass-like appearance, allowing light and background colors to show through them. Their exact material has not been independently identified, so they are described as translucent glass-like inserts rather than confirmed glass.

Care

The surviving original care label states: do not use in a dishwasher, do not soak for extended periods, and do not use the surface for cutting. Gentle sponge washing with mild soap and lukewarm water followed by towel drying is recommended.
