This is a rare and excellent vintage condition Millers Falls “Rose Patent” model number 1 with a 12 inch sweep bit brace non ratcheting hand drill.
I have 3 sizes of this brace and they are shown in the 3rd photo for comparison. I have them all listed currently but only the one described here is for this listing.
Pearson’s “The American Patented Brace” lists this brace’s rarity as a “B” which means that only 6 to 20 examples of this brace have been seen. As of the time the book was published.
This Rose Patent brace was manufactured between 1868 to 1873, about 150 years ago.
It is complete and original and still works properly. The head handle or pad is Steel and the wrist handle is non turning beautiful brass and Rosewood in excellent condition.

A few years ago I became passionate about using vintage hand tools vs. battery or electric powered whenever it made sense to do so. Today my passion still thrives and I enjoy properly oiling/waxing, cleaning or refurbishing, if needed those same vintage woodworking tools.
My goal is to place as many of these high quality, made in the USA vintage hand tools back into the hands of today’s craftsmen. I would never “part out” a good tool just for the proceeds. If the tool I have acquired is serviceable I will put it into as good of condition it can be and sell to friends or on .
