Vintage SNAP-ON BC-16 claw hammer with original American Hickory wood octagonal handle.
In my research, I found that this model is extremely rare, possibly because in the early 1970’s, when this hammer was manufactured, Snap-On primarily targeted the mechanic's tool market, and a claw hammer is more of a carpenter’s tool. One theory was that it was manufactured to open crates of Snap-On tools… but that’s only urban legend.
There have been very few sales of this Snap-On American Hickory wood handled claw hammerthat I could find. The most recent sale was for $70, but the handle was extensively damaged and degraded. Prior to that, the most recent sale I found was for over $150 in 2018, for one in only slightly better condition than this one.This is pricedconservatively between those sale prices, for a rare item to complete your collection!
CONDITION:
See all high-definition photos as part of description. The steel head is in very good, as found, condition with no damage. It is attached to the original handle firmly, with no wobble or degradation. There are only the typical dings from typical hammer use and the patina for its age. The Snap-on stamping is clear & legible. The opposite side reads 'WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES' but the words are worn, and “WEAR” is about worn off. The handle is nice and solid. Some of the varnish is worn, and there are some dings to the wood, but it is solid and could go to work tomorrow! It is in “as found” condition, as I like tool metal to show its age. Any alteration is up to the new owner.
