Early Vintage Chinese Mudman Figure/Statue

This beautifully crafted and finely detailed figure is a Chinese Mudman. These figures are often wise elders, sometimes simple working men, but all have rich historical and cultural significance and are visually stunning figures,representing many different areas of the Chinese culture. Very early examples were often ceramic,while others, in early and mid 20th century, were sometimes crafted from earthenware and a river clay type of terracotta, as is this one.

Pre-owned, this figure is in excellent vintage condition. It is 9” high and weighs about 1 lb, 6 oz. unpackaged.

This Mudman statue represents an elder gentleman, likely a farmer, holding a rake in his hands. He wears his hair in a topknot and is dressed in period clothing. The clay type used in making this figure was often used by craftsmen from locally dug river silt clay which bakes into a dense earthenware similar in color and texture to terracotta, hand-painted, then covered with a rich glaze in striking bright colors. The glaze was applied to clothing, while leaving the skin tones on faces, hands and feet the natural color of the clay, and unglazed. Later 20th-century reproductions and variations sometimes utilized finer stoneware or light-colored pottery on the figure’s flesh tones, whereas original vintage pieces rely heavily on this distinct reddish-brown or dark earthenware base, which this figure appears to be.

I do not have this statue’s history, so I can not pinpoint its exact age with certainty, but only that it likely dates to around mid-20th century.

This statue features beautiful workmanship, and is a great collectible item or decorative piece you can proudly display in your home or office.
