Vintage Texaco John S. Leach Congratulatory Letters Scrapbooks 1938 & 1952-53 For Sale

Original archive of congratulatory letters presented to John Sayles Leach (J.S. Leach), longtime executive of The Texas Company, later Texaco.This lot includes three scrapbooks/booklets sold together:

• Two volumes from 1938, marking his promotion to Vice President of The Texas Company
• One larger volume from 1952–1953, marking his election as President (1952) and then Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (1953)

Together the books contain an estimated 50 -100 or more original letters. There is a mix of typed and handwritten correspondence. Several letters are on The Texas Company / Texaco letterhead. Others appear to be from colleagues, oil-industry associates, bankers, civic leaders, and well-wishers. John Sayles Leach (1891–1964) joined The Texas Company in 1916 as a salesman in Dallas. He worked the oil fields around Wichita Falls after the Burkburnett boom, later managed southern sales from Houston, and rose through the company. He became vice president in 1938, director in 1949, executive vice president in 1950, president in 1952, and chairman and CEO in 1953. He stepped down as chairman in 1956 at the mandatory retirement age of 65. The Houston Chronicle later called him one of the authentic giants of the oil industry. These books document two of the major career milestones of a senior Texaco executive during the company’s mid-20th-century growth.
