This is a late 19th century Thomas Furnival & Sons “Mikado” oval covered serving dish. The main dish features a lobed rim and body and measures approximately 12 1/4” (including handles) x 7 5/8” by 2 3/4” deep without the lid. When covered the overall height is approximately 5 1/2” to the top of the lid. The base is footed, scalloped and lightly decorated with a bit of brown transfer. Both the main dish and the lid feature various Japanesque motifs bound together by a trompe l’oeil ribbon of changing patterns and punctuated by roundels and cartouches of various designs. The lid features a smaller continuous band of scroll work near the integral handle, which is decorated with a bold geometric transfer pattern. There are no discernible cracks on either piece. The main dish has a few minor flakes and associated wear along the upper rim as well as a few spots of light foxing in the bottom of the dish. Light crazing overall commensurate with age.
