Wonderful group of three vintage wooden boxes from the same family collection, originating from India, Austria and Spain.
These appear to have been intended as tabletop cigarette boxes, although they were never used for cigarettes to my knowledge. All three are clean inside and each closes beautifully—with an unusually soft, precise fit. The best way I can describe it is that they close with a whisper.
• INDIA: Dark wood box decorated with geometric line inlay and small light-colored inlaid motifs. Measures approximately 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 inches. I believe my uncle acquired this box while serving in India during World War II.
• AUSTRIA: Handsome box with beautifully figured burl-wood surfaces, contrasting dark interior trim and a fitted inner compartment. Marked “MADE IN AUSTRIA” on the underside. Measures almost 5 x almost 3 1/2 x 2 1/4 inches.
• SPAIN: Smooth, richly grained olivewood box marked “oliv-art” and “MADE IN SPAIN” on the underside. Measures approximately 4 3/4 x 3 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches.
My aunt and uncle traveled extensively and probably acquired the Austrian and Spanish boxes during their travels in those countries. My uncle wrote his name or initials in various places on the boxes, as shown in the photographs.
All three remain in good vintage condition with expected surface wear, light scratches, small marks and age-related wear to the wood, finish, inlay and hardware. Please examine all photographs closely, as they form an important part of the condition description.
