Vintage Westclox Spice S8-E Copper Electric Wall Clock MCM USA Working For Sale

BUCK’S STATEMENT:

There was a time when nearly every American kitchen had a clock like this hanging somewhere between the refrigerator and the telephone—a dependable electric Westclox quietly keeping time through morning coffee, Sunday dinners and kids rushing out the door for school. This is the Westclox “Spice,” model S8-E, a wonderfully period piece of American mid-century design with its warm copper-tone metal case, ivory dial, wonderfully angular black numerals and bright red sweep second hand. Westclox introduced the Spice in 1955, and examples of this copper version appear in Westclox catalogs throughout the mid-century years. It was the kind of simple, stylish household object that didn’t need to announce itself; you plugged it into the wall, hung it in the kitchen, and expected it to keep ticking for years.

Made in the USA by Westclox of La Salle, Illinois, the clock retains its original electric cord and two-prong plug, and the reverse is stamped SPICE, S8-E, 115 VOLTS A.C., 60 CY., 2 WATTS. It has been plugged in and tested and is currently running and keeping time during testing. The copper-tone bezel shows plenty of honest age with oxidation, spotting, discoloration and finish wear, while the dial and clear cover show additional marks and surface wear consistent with decades of use. I wouldn’t polish away that history—the aged copper finish is a big part of what makes this one look right. Whether it goes back into a 1950s kitchen, above an old Formica table, into a retro diner display or onto the wall of a mid-century collection, this is a surviving piece of everyday American design that’s still doing the job it was made to do.
