This can be definitely described as being made in 1961 because it was the first year Western used DuPonts synthetic plastic “ Delrin” instead of bone but in 1961 bone was still being used but because of this being a 2 line tang stamp and having Delrin scales 1961 is the last year of this tang stamp so it’s a transitional period.
Both the large clip point blade and saw have good strong snap the saw a bit stronger than blade but no lazy wobble side to side with either.
Blade has been used but has a nice sharp edge and tip on it. Nice coat of grey patina as well.
Saw looks to have never been used all teeth are sharp and proud.
Inside is very clean and it wouldn’t take much effort to get it all looking bright inside. Very light rust spots that wiped right out for me .
Joints are very clean also .
Has original leather sheath it was sold with in 1961. Snap works holds flap down but I can’t hear or feel that “ snap” when button is pushed shut yet it locks in tight so I don’t know what’s going on there but it holds . A little ugly on front of sheath for character.
Good overall large sharp pocket knife!
No cracks or breaks/ shrinkage anywhere on either side of knife.
The saw and blade may and does have oxidation spots but no pitting. Beautiful old Western Ranger Hunting knife. Shield is still bare no initials like some have .
