The original course was first published in Nov 1922 . . . these lessons are hand dated by the original owner in 1944 . . . whenever the course was purchased, they were purchasing the original 12 lessons of the Dynamic Tension program, which have remained functionally unchanged since the 1920s. While updated for print and formatted into modern booklets (or sent out as copies of the classic mimeographed materials), the core exercises trace their roots directly back to that initial November 1922 publication.
Charles Atlas Bodybuilding Lessons—often branded as the "Dynamic Tension" course—is a historic mail-order fitness program developed in the 1920s. It teaches individuals to build muscle and strength without weights by using self-resistance, pitting one muscle group against another.
He pioneered the way in terms of delivering a unique program that changed the world of fitness at the time. His easy to follow guides, along with a nutrition plan and “how to live guide” paved the way for building weak men and women all across the world into strong and healthy individuals.
The Core Concept: Dynamic Tension
Instead of relying on barbells or dumbbells, Dynamic Tension works by creating active muscular resistance within your own body. For example, you might flex your bicep as hard as possible while using your opposite arm to push down against that flexion, mimicking the strain of lifting a heavy weight.
- The Theory: Atlas claimed this method was inspired by watching wild animals, like lions, which build strength by constantly stretching, flexing, and resisting their own movements.
- At-Home Convenience: The program was designed to be completed in the comfort and privacy of your own home with no required equipment.
What the Lessons Included
Beyond the self-resistance exercises, the course was an early precursor to holistic online coaching. When clients subscribed, they received:
Illustrated lessons and routines detailing how to target various major muscle groups.
- Personalized response and guidance from Atlas himself.
- Guidance on nutrition, posture, and lifestyle changes.
