Vtg 1943 WWII Army Script Abbott & Costello Math Routine Charlie McCarthy OTR

This incredibly rare 11-page mimeographed script packet, designated as Script LXXXII, is a vital primary source document representing the pinnacle of World War II military troop entertainment. Produced and distributed by the Special Service Division of the Army Service Forces, this packet bears the strict, explicit classification restricting its use to Army transports and overseas locations exclusively.

This restrictive designation is a major driver of historical value. These comedy sketches were strictly intended to boost the morale of forward-deployed combat troops and soldiers in transit aboard troopships. Because they were printed on highly acidic, consumable wartime paper and sent directly into active combat theaters rather than safe stateside USO halls, the survival rate of intact, complete copies is exceedingly low.

POINTS OF INTEREST AND COLLECTOR VALUE

Abbott and Costello Vaudeville Legacy: The premier attraction of this packet is the first sketch, explicitly credited to Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. It is a textual record of one of their most legendary vaudeville logic routines, commonly known as the 365 Days or Salary Reduction bit. Abbott and Costello\'s rapid-fire math routines are the bedrock of their comedic legacy. An official U.S. War Department document explicitly authorizing troops to perform this specific routine is a holy grail for comedy collectors and vaudeville historians.

Hollywood and Broadway Pedigree: Beyond Abbott and Costello, this packet is a masterclass in 1940s entertainment talent repurposed for the war effort. It includes an authorized Charlie McCarthy radio adaptation. Furthermore, the third sketch is authored by John Lund, a highly successful Broadway actor and writer who would go on to be a major Hollywood leading man. The fourth sketch was penned by Snag Werris, a legendary gag writer who later worked for Jackie Gleason.

SYNOPSES OF INCLUDED SKETCHES

Abbott and Costello Number 16 (By Bud Abbott and Lou Costello)A masterful transcription of the duo\'s famous logic routine. Costello demands his yearly salary of one dollar a day for 365 days of work. Abbott uses convoluted, fast-paced mathematics to deduct time for sleeping, recreation, Sundays, and holidays, ultimately proving to Costello that he only worked a fraction of a single day and therefore actually owes Abbott money.

Charlie McCarthy Beauty Shop Sketch (Uncredited Adapter)A farcical beauty parlor routine where a comic and a young woman interact with a frantic French hairdresser. The sketch involves bizarre beauty treatments made of explosive ingredients like nitroglycerine, and concludes with a ridiculous mathematical sequence where the hairdresser calculates a massive bill using nonsensical foreign currency conversions.

The Home Life of a Top Kick (By John Lund)A two-part sketch exploring the duality of military leadership. It opens with Sergeant Tubbs acting as a terrifying, iron-fisted disciplinarian to his terrified enlisted men. However, the scene then transitions into a dream sequence revealing his home life, where the terrifying Sergeant is actually a completely submissive, henpecked husband who is ordered around and forced to do chores by his domineering wife.

Jail, Jail, The Gangs All There (By Snag Werris)A classic misdirection comedy routine. Sergeant Jackson attempts to collect a hundred-dollar debt from Private Tommy White. Through a series of fast-paced misunderstandings, Jackson learns that Tommy gave the money to his uncle, who supposedly has a steady government job making large amounts of cash. The punchline reveals that the uncle is actually in prison for counterfeiting.

NOTABLE SCRIPT MOMENTS AND PARAPHRASED SCENES

The Restrictive Cover Header:The front page of the packet features the standard wartime classification warning, noting that the material was distributed by the Special Service Division and was restricted entirely to Army use on transports and overseas exclusively.

The Abbott and Costello Math Logic:In the opening pages of the Abbott and Costello sketch, Abbott systematically dismantles Costello\'s demand for 365 dollars. By getting Costello to agree that he sleeps eight hours a day and rests for another eight hours, Abbott argues that Costello is only active for one-third of the year. He then aggressively subtracts Sundays, a two-week vacation, and holidays, leading Costello to confusion and frustration as his supposed yearly earnings dwindle to nothing.

The Top Kick\'s Domestic Reversal:During John Lund\'s sketch, the contrast between military and civilian life is heavily emphasized. After watching Sergeant Tubbs ruthlessly drill a soldier about his posture and uniform, the scene shifts to his home. There, his wife aggressively commands him to wipe the grin off his face, stand at attention, and immediately begin doing the housework and KP duty as punishment for a recent poker game.

The Counterfeiting Confession:In the final sketch by Snag Werris, the humor relies on careful wordplay regarding the uncle\'s employment. The Private proudly explains to the Sergeant that his uncle has a state job where he makes money and has ten men watching over him. It is only at the very end of the routine that the Sergeant realizes the uncle is doing a fifteen-year sentence for making fake currency.
