WPL Numbers (1941-1959): These are Wool Products Labeling numbers. Only numbers ranging from 00001 to 19199 exist. If you see a WPL code, the brand registered it mid-century.
• No Synthetic Blend Names (Pre-1950s): If a tag says "All Cotton" or
"100% Wool," it points to an older era. Synthetic fibers like polyester didn't see mainstream use until the mid-1950s, often appearing under early trade names like Dacron or Terylene.
• Logo Evolution: Department
stores updated their logos often.
For example, JCPenney officially went by J.C. Penney Co. or Penney's until 1971. In 1971, they switched to the modern sans-serif JCPenney block logo to honor their founder.
