Vintage California Bicentennial El Camino Real Mission Bell – Gamboa Mexico – El Camino Bank Anaheim

A distinctive vintage California commemorative bell featuring the California Bicentennial 1769–1969 design and the iconic California grizzly bear on a round medallion. This example is especially interesting because the reverse of the medallion is marked “EL CAMINO BANK – ANAHEIM,” identifying it as a bank-branded promotional or presentation variant rather than one of the more commonly seen generic El Camino Real souvenir bells.

The bell follows the classic El Camino Real mission bell form, with a textured domed base, tall column, curved suspension arm, working-style hanging bell form, and internal clapper. Both the base and bell body show visible casting/mold seams, consistent with cast-metal manufacture.

The underside appears to be marked “GAMBOA” and “MEXICO.” A closely matching California Bicentennial bell from the same family has also been documented and sold as a Gamboa Mexico example. The metal has the appearance of cast brass or a similar copper-based non-ferrous alloy; the exact alloy has not been laboratory tested. The naturally aged surface has developed an attractive green, brown, and bronze-toned patina.

Historical context: California celebrated its bicentennial in 1969, commemorating events beginning in 1769. Period collecting literature documents miniature El Camino Real replica bells made for the California Bicentennial, including a closely related example with the round California bear medallion and 1769–1969 inscription.

Museum archival records also document that Villa Caliente Enterprises of La Jolla, California, established in 1968, marketed miniature replica El Camino Real bells for the California Bicentennial and that those bells were manufactured in Mexico. No direct documentation has yet been located proving that this particular El Camino Bank/Gamboa example was distributed by Villa Caliente, so that connection is presented only as historical context rather than a confirmed attribution.

An important dating detail: El Camino Bank of Anaheim began operations in May 1970. Therefore, although the commemorative design itself is dated 1769–1969, this particular bank-branded example was most likely produced or distributed in 1970 or shortly thereafter, rather than necessarily being manufactured during calendar year 1969.

What makes this example particularly appealing is the combination of:

California Bicentennial 1769–1969 imagery • Round California grizzly bear medallion • El Camino Real mission-bell design • EL CAMINO BANK ANAHEIM branding • GAMBOA / MEXICO marking • Vintage cast-metal construction

Many comparable El Camino Real bells encountered on the market use rectangular plaques or different institutional branding. The exact combination seen on this example—especially the round Bicentennial bear medallion paired with El Camino Bank Anaheim branding—appears to be an uncommon variation based on the examples researched.

Approximate Measurements

* Overall height: 10 in

* Base diameter: 3.5 in

* Weight: 6.6 oz / approx. 187 g

The aged finish has been photographed closely so buyers can evaluate the surface and condition. Please review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description.

A wonderful collectible for enthusiasts of California history, California Bicentennial memorabilia, El Camino Real and Mission collectibles, vintage bells, bank advertising, Gamboa Mexico cast metal, or historic Anaheim memorabilia.
