Vintage HAND CARVED Painted Wood Mask MONKEY HEAD Hinged Jaw/Animal Hair INDONESIA
Size approx. 8.5" long x 6.75" wide x 3.5" deep
A genuine hand carved, hand painted ceremonial mask from Indonesia. The hand carving and detailing on this mask is superb: his teeth are all carved and the opening for the eyes is quite interesting
This mask features real animal hair [most likely boar or cow hair] which is nailed to the mask to give him eyebrows and tufts of hair on his cheeks
This mask is HINGED meaning the lower jaw is a separate piece securely attached with a nailed-in strip of leather on each side. The mouth can be slightly opened, but the bottom jaw does NOT fall open when this mask is hanging on a wall. It stays neatly together and in one place.
Ready to hang- secure hanging wire attached across back of head.
Incredibly expressive features, right down to his detailed nose and ears.
This mask was made by a superb Indonesian Artisan, most likely for use in festivals/ceremonies
This mask is not a lesser, formulaic tourist piece easily available and obtained- it's quite special & unique. There is a charming spirit to the facial features.
The inner surface of this mask is, although carved, quite smooth/not rough or splintered

Excellent condition, no flaws damage cracks or repair to mask other than a tiny area on the bottom lip which is uneven wood but the paint is intact and undamaged, it may just be a natural flaw [see last pic]. Light/normal wear for age and use.
I have owned this mask for about 40 years and feel it's time to pass him along to another person to be treasured and appreciated.
