Vintage hand-carved African family sculpture from Kenya, measuring approximately 12.5 inches tall and about 5 inches wide/deep. This is a substantial carving weighing exactly 5 lb 8.8 oz.
Features multiple detailed family/community figures carved from a single solid piece of dense hardwood in the Makonde/Ujamaa tradition, often referred to as a “Tree of Life” style carving.
The exposed bottom shows extremely dark brown/black heartwood surrounded by a lighter natural sapwood edge. Based on the appearance, density and weight, the wood appears consistent with African blackwood / mpingo, a wood traditionally associated with Makonde carving. Exact wood species has not been independently tested or certified.
Hand-carved throughout with detailed faces, hair, clothing and textured surfaces. Natural variations, tool marks and small age-related imperfections are present and are part of the handmade character.
Carving still retains the original “Hand Carved – Made in Kenya” label on bottom
