This is an authentic, mid-century L.L. Bean working decoy, featuring the official Freeport, Maine factory stamp on the base. While L.L. Bean is most famous for cork, this specimen represents a fascinating period from 1958–1964 when they offered lightweight, high-performance molded fiber decoys (produced under the Ariduk line fromGeneral Fibre Company). This construction style was prized for its durability and realistic water profile. This Black Duck decoy is a rare find for the Bean enthusiast or the collector of early fiber-pulp \"working\" birds.
Condition:The decoy is in \"as-found\" condition with visible field wear. The original paint shows overall scuffing, chips, and weathering. The tip of the tail has a notable chip and fiber loss, exposing the internal pulp core.There is a minor internal rattle when handled, which is typical for vintage hollow fiber decoys and likely represents a small piece of detached factory ballast. The original screw-eye anchor attachment is present and secure.
