Distinctive hand-carved and hand-painted wooden face sculpture/mask featuring an unusual stylized female face surrounded by richly detailed botanical imagery.
The sculptural face has a prominent carved nose, dimensional lips and expressive almond-shaped eyes. One side of the face is largely natural wood tone while the opposite side is densely decorated with carved and painted leaves, flowers and vegetation in warm earth tones accented with turquoise-green, orange, red and purple.
The botanical decoration continues around the sides of the piece, giving it visual interest from virtually every angle. Particularly striking is the incorporation of additional eye imagery within the surrounding foliage, creating a surreal or folk-art quality.
An apparent hand-painted artist’s signature or inscription is present along one side within the painted decoration. The inscription is difficult to decipher, and the artist has not been positively identified.
Approximately 5” long × 3¼” wide.
Pre-owned condition with age-related surface wear, variations to the painted finish and small marks visible in the photographs. Please examine photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
