DescriptionOriginal 1938 commemorative photo album from the 12th Division of the Sasebo Naval Barracks, documenting the training of newly enlisted 4th Class Seamen of the Imperial Japanese Navy. For collectors unfamiliar with the Japanese naval system, the Sasebo Naval Barracks was one of the places where new sailors received their first formal naval training. Recruits learned military discipline, drill, basic duties, daily routines, and the fundamentals needed before being assigned to ships or other naval units. This album includes much more than formal group portraits. It contains photographs of sailors in formation, training scenes, barracks life, classrooms, meals, and other aspects of daily naval life. Together, they offer a rare visual record of how young men entered the Imperial Japanese Navy in the late 1930s.At the beginning of the album is a portrait of Vice Admiral Teijiro Toyoda, who was serving as Commander-in-Chief of the Sasebo Naval District at the time. The album dates from June 1938, when the Second Sino-Japanese War was already underway. The young sailors shown here were entering naval service at a moment when Japan was moving toward a much larger war. That historical context gives these otherwise ordinary training photographs an added weight.Condition shows age-related toning, stains, wear, creases, folds, and some writing. Please review the photos carefully.A strong piece for collectors of Imperial Japanese Navy history, naval training, militaria photography, and original prewar Japanese military documents.Own a Piece of History.Shipping
