Description
A rare original wartime publication titled “Muteki Sensuikan” (The Invincible Submarine), originally published in late 1941. This copy is the 10th printing, issued in April 1942, during the height of the Pacific War.
Containing over 200 pages, the book combines technical explanations, photographs, fold-out diagrams, and detailed illustrations of Imperial Japanese Navy submarines. It was intended to introduce submarine technology to the Japanese public while promoting confidence in Japan’s naval forces during WWII.
An especially interesting feature is that the book was supervised by Imperial Japanese Navy Lieutenant Commander Saijiro Furuhashi (古橋才次郎). During the war, Furuhashi served in the Imperial Navy’s press and information organizations, helping communicate naval operations and technology to the Japanese public. Although this is not an official Imperial Japanese Navy technical manual, its supervision by an active naval officer provides valuable historical context and offers insight into how submarine warfare was presented during the wartime period.
Highlights
• Supervised by Imperial Japanese Navy Lt. Commander Saijiro Furuhashi
• Large fold-out cutaway diagram of a Japanese submarine
• Technical illustrations of submarine construction and internal layout
• Periscope operation, ballast tanks, crew compartments, and torpedo systems
• Numerous wartime photographs of submarines, naval personnel, and training
• Color illustrations depicting submarine attacks
• Comparative material on German U-boats and foreign submarine designs
The book remains complete with its original binding and fold-out illustrations. It shows expected age-related wear, including edge wear, foxing, and some cover damage, but remains an excellent historical reference and display piece.
Rather than serving as a technical handbook for naval personnel, this book represents an important example of wartime naval education and public information. For collectors interested in Imperial Japanese Navy submarines, wartime propaganda, naval history, or military publishing, it offers a fascinating contemporary perspective.
