Description:Featuring the December 1963 issue of Zoonooz,a magazine published by the San Diego Zoo.

The cover features a black-and-white photograph of an Indian Rhinoceros. Here, a Disney Studio researcher / artist has embellished the cover by adding a top hat and a more decorative horn. While no evidence exists to support the direct connection to this magazine, the character of "Rocky the Rhino" was originally developed for inclusion in The Jungle Book (1967), but was later dropped from the film in order to maintain the pace of the story. However, this type of creative inspiration is exactly how Disney animators would research an animal being developed for a new animated film.

A stamp at upper right corner indicates the magazine wasrecorded by studio librarians as being placed into service (Copy 2; as noted on cover)by the Library of the Walt Disney Studio on January 9, 1968.

There are now over 4,000Indian rhinoceroses(also known as the greater one-horned rhinoceros) left in the wild. Theirpopulation is steadily increasing, making them one of Asia's greatestconservation success stories after dropping to fewer than 200 individuals atthe start of the 20th century.
