DESCRIPTION
Wonderful late 19th-century puzzle and amusement scrapbook belonging to Hazel Hammer, identified by the original handwritten cover label: “Hazel Hammer / History / Form II.”
Measures approximately 8.25 x 8 inches. The scrapbook is now disbound, with the cardstock covers and individual lined-paper leaves loose.
An especially interesting homemade collection devoted heavily to Victorian-era puzzles, rebuses, hidden-picture challenges, magic tricks, parlor amusements and visual word games. Hazel apparently clipped material from newspapers, magazines and other printed sources and mounted it throughout the book.
Material visible in the scrapbook includes:
- Numerous hidden-picture puzzles, including “Find the Baby,” “Where is the Bulldog?,” “Where is the Miner’s Companion?,” “Find the Fisherman’s Daughter,” “Where is the Boss?” and others.
- Tom Smith’s Christmas Crackers / Stanley Puzzle sheets, including “Find Tippoo Tib,” “Find Emin Pasha,” and an “Exhibition Puzzle – Homeward Bound – Find Buffalo Bill.”
- The Daily News’ Puzzle Picture.
- Illustrated rebus and picture-word puzzles, including a large “October in Our History” puzzle.
- Royal Clue Puzzle Card and an advertising puzzle card for the Enterprise Restaurant, 203 Clark St., Basement.
- Newspaper articles explaining tricks with toothpicks.
- Extensive illustrated instructions for tricks with strings and parlor tricks.
- Artful Juggling card/manipulation instructions.
- Material discussing sleight-of-hand and magician Robert-Houdin.
- Illustrated hand and finger tricks.

Many leaves remain blank or have evidence where mounted pieces were once removed.
