Wonderful 7-piece lot of vintage photographic Christmas and holiday greeting cards from the Steinmetz family of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, in the Philadelphia area. The cards appear to span a number of years and feature creative family photographs incorporated into individually designed holiday greetings.
Research indicates this is the family of Edward Risbrough Steinmetz and Irene Barnett Steinmetz, with their sons Edward Barnett “Barney” Steinmetz and William Alfred Steinmetz. Edward “Barney” Steinmetz was born in Philadelphia in 1937 and was raised in Elkins Park, attending Cheltenham High School. William Alfred Steinmetz was born in Philadelphia on December 8, 1941, corresponding with the dated birth announcement incorporated into one of the Christmas cards.
The seven cards include a variety of distinctive photographic designs: family portraits appearing through a wrapped Christmas package; parents and children pulling on an oversized wishbone; portraits arranged among Christmas tree branches; two boys posed as church carolers; a young boy with Santa at a chimney; and other personalized family holiday photographs.
One especially interesting card announces “William Alfred Steinmetz — December 8th 1941”, providing an unusually precise genealogical connection within the group.
Other visible greetings include “The Steinmetzs Are Wishing You and Yours much Joy at Christmas and in the New Year,” “Santa Brought What I Wanted — I Hope He Is Good To You, Too,” “Christmas Greetings from The Steinmetz Family,” and “Caroling Our Good Wishes — The Steinmetz Family.”
A particularly appealing intact family grouping documenting the Steinmetz children over multiple Christmas seasons. Excellent material for collectors of Pennsylvania genealogy, Philadelphia-area history, vernacular photography, photographic Christmas cards, family photography and holiday ephemera.
