This is a card signed bySir Edwin Arnold (1832-1904),a notable English poet, journalist, translator, and educator.Initially a schoolmaster, and later the Principalof theDeccan Collegein India, Arnold's experiencesabroad influenced his literary endeavors. Arnold'spoem,THE LIGHT OF ASIA, an exploration of Buddhistphilosophy through the life ofPrince Gautama(the Buddha), earned him widespread acclaim.Arnold is also well-known for his translation ofthe Bhagavad Gita from Sanskrit into English,under the title THE SONG CELESTIAL.Arnold's personal life was marked by multiplemarriages, including one to a Japanese woman,reflecting his deep engagement with Japaneseculture as evidenced in his writings. An advocateforvegetarianism, he played a significant role inthe West London Food Reform Society alongsidefigures likeMahatma Gandhi.Arnold died at theage of 77, in London, in 1904.
