1800\'s ANTIQUE COLORFUL SLAG GLASS LAMP WITH LIGHTED BASE AND BRASS SCENIC MOTIF:
$525.00

Please see all of the photographs and read the complete description. Both the images and text are considered a full disclosure of condition.

A LITTLE HISTORY: It is thought that manufacturers created slag glass by taking slag, the waste content of metal ores, from iron-smelting works and adding it to molten glass. The process created a variety of effects, such as, tortoiseshell and marbling. Slag glass is often found in purple, blue, brown, and green, with streaks and swirls of white or cream. The glass originally went by descriptive names such as, \"Marble Glass,\" or \"Brown Malachite.\" The British company Sowerby patented its recipe for purple malachite in 1878. Lampshades were a popular application of slag glass in both England and the United States. Nearly any lamp maker from the Art Nouveau period may have used slag glass in their lampshades. Some people often refer to any type of pressed glass containing swirls or streaks as \"slag glass.\" According to Collectors Weekly, the key to identifying true \"slag glass\" is to look for obvious and richly marbled glass.

THE LISTED LAMP: This lamp is gorgeous. You will note the wonderful colors in the photographs. There are multiple hues of purple, blue, light brown, and cream. The glass shade is encased in a brass fret work with a scenic motif of towering palm trees, over what appears to be a dwelling in an oasis. The lighted base is encased in brass fret work with regal pillars surrounded by delicate designs. There are two different switch mechanisms for turning the lights on. At the top of the base is a button that turns to illuminate the base. Under the shade are two separate pull strings to turn on one or both lights, depending on preference. There are three bulbs that will be packaged separately. The top uses two and there is one used up under the column. {The listed pictures show both lights on}. This piece stands 24\" to the top of the shade, {27\" to the top of the ribbon finial}. The Shade is 15\" in diameter, and the base is 8\" in diameter. It weighs a heavy 17.8 pounds.

CONDITION: The glass in both the shade and base are in good condition. The shade does have one panel with a few slight surface cracks. {Shown in photograph # 10}. These cracks do not go through to the underside of the glass. {See photograph # 11}. Please note in photograph # 9, showing under the shade, that metal tabs were used in the manufacture to hold the glass in place. While the tabs perform the intended function, there is a small amount of movement {\"play\"} of the glass between the tabs and the frame. I don\'t believe these were meant to be extremely tight as a precaution to putting undue pressure on the glass. Photograph # 7 shows the very top of the shade. Please note there is a slight crack in the metal framing leading from the top of the hole approximately 3/4\" down one of the outside braces. This does not affect the integrity of the framing. In addition, there is a slight separation in the metal ring at the top hole of the lamp that is about 3/8.\" {Also in photograph # 7 }. The round disk shown in photographs # 5 and # 6 is placed in the top hole, and the ribbon finial {also shown} is screwed down to hold the shade in place. When assembling this, a little manipulation is needed {possibly because of the 3/8\" separation} to make the disc fit evenly and not higher on one side for aesthetic reasons. The disc and finial hold the shade on securely. At some point in time a sealant was used in between the lamp column and the very bottom of the base. This can be seen in the last photograph. Sorry about the picture quality, it was difficult to photograph as the sealant is clear.

This lamp is from the late 1800\'s. There is some tarnish on the metal. The lamp is well over 100 years old and although it does have a few issues, it is a wonderful piece for the antique lover!

SHIPPING: Will only be to the continuous 48 US States via USPS Standard Post with tracking, insurance, and signature required on delivery. I am adding 6 pounds to the shipping weight to allow for all the extra protection and custom boxing that will be provided. Please note that the lamp will ship in TWO separate boxes {one for the base, and one for the shade}. Please be assured that every precaution is taken when preparing items for shipment. The flat shipping cost for the two boxes will be $99.00 total to any of the lower 48 US States. {The UPS store would charge $160.00 to Chicago, IL}.

This is no international shipping for this item.
