This is the extremely rare King Portfolio One, published by Russ Cochran in 1976, and presenting classic strip pages in a beautiful large-size format that lets you admire the incredible artwork as it should be seen. The portfolio is a large book-type format, with the pages in black and white and printed on high quality thick glossy cardstock paper. The portfolio measures approximately 12" by 18", which is about the same size as pencil and ink original art pages. The art is reproduced larger here, closer to the original format, and the detail really comes out, particularly with the sharpness of the black and white print. Cochran's intent was to make the portfolio as close as possible as the reader could come to being able to see each page of original artwork. The portfolio includes classic King Features Syndicate strips such as Krazy Kat by George Herriman, Red Barry by Will Gould, Polly and her Pals by Cliff Sterrett, Barney Baxter by Frank Miller, Mandrake the Magician by Lee Falk and Phil Davis, and Prince Valiant by Hal Foster. The main focus, though, is on Alex Raymond's 1935-1937 work, and there are some beautiful pages from Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim. Russ Cochran wrote the Foreword for the portfolio, and provides some interesting background on Raymond and the Sunday newspaper comic strips of the 1930's, which he feels are the best of all-time. This amazing collectable portfolio is in very good condition, particularly for its age and scarcity. Please note that the cover has a serrated knife-like right side edge, which is not a defect. This is the style of how they were made, and the edge was done this way on purpose for a vintage feel, it is not damage to the portfolio. The portfolio is very hard to find (much more so than Cochran's EC Comics portfolios even), and does not come up for sale very often.
