2 Antique John Marin Abstract Modernist Art Colotype Prints - Maine 1930's: $249.00
2 Antique early 1930's Colotype prints in the Modernist Abstract style, by American artist John Marin (1870-1953). Prints have brand new mattes on them. They are both landscape scenes from Maine. One is entitled "On Morse Mountain" and the other is "Phippsburg, Maine". Early American Modernist painter John Marin is most well-known for his abstract watercolor landscapes. As one of the first American artists to explore abstraction techniques, Marin was a pioneer. He was an integral pioneer of a new aesthetic model for painting in America. The one collotype measures 16" by 14" with the matte. This collotype alone is 8' by 6.5". The second is 16" by 14" with the matte, and it measures 7.5" by 6" alone. Marin's works can be found in all leading American art museums. He studied at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. A Collotype is a gelatin-based photographic printing process invented by Alphonse Poitevin in 1855 to print images in a varirty of tones without the need for half-tone screens. The majority of collotypes were produced between the 1870's and early 1930's. It was the first form of photolithography.
