6.Vintage Native American (Menomonee) Photographs by Harmon Percy Marble 20th c :
$65.00

This group of six fascinating vintage photographs of Menomonee Tribal members from about 1911-1926 were taken by Harmon Percy Marble (1870-1926). I am not certain if these are original photos taken at the time or (more likely) are vintage reprints from the middle of the 20th c. Marble was and Indian Agent for the Government from 1911-1926 (the time period when these photos were taken) and was later the Mayor of Las Vegas. All but two have notes written in pencil or typed notes that were probably provided by Cultural Anthropologist and author Russel Hartman. Hartman is the director and curator of the Navajo Tribal Museum in Window Rock, New Mexico. I have found a number of groups of similar photos with these notes sold at various American sale houses. From the left, The first photo is of what I believe is Harmon and (in pencil)"Jim Crow / Last of the Blanket Indians of his Tribe". The second photo (8" x 10") is also identified as Jim Crow with the same pencil inscription as the first. Hartman adds details in his typed label. The third photograph (center top) shows a procession of tribal members and is only identified by a pencil inscription "MENOMONEE". The fourth somewhat faded photograph is described (again in pencil) "JIM CROW'S FUNERAL" but Hartman identifies it as possibly being Souix in his typed label. The fifth photograph is described in pencil: "INDIAN FUNERAL GHOST HOUSES". The sixth photo depicts a gathering of tribal members but bears no description on the reverse. All the photos except the 8" x 10" photo of Jim Crow are 5" x 7". All are in good physical condition but the images vary in quality.
