I\'m pleased to offer this choice specimen of Almandine in Schist from Lake Martin, Tallapoosa County, Alabama. The specimen measures 4.20 x 3.63 x .96 inches or 10.68 x 9.23 x 2.43cm and is in exceptional condition!
This is from the John Weber (1926-2015) collection of Phoenix, Arizona and is accompanied by a label from Jeffrey Mining Company of Sudbury, Tennessee. I remember JMC setting up at the old Inn Suites at the Tucson Show but I can\'t seem to find anything about them online. The label has suffered some damage as the Weber collection was housed in a separate building on his property and many labels glued to display boxes fell off and some flaked apart merely with handling.
The Lake Martin garnet locality was a favorite collecting spot for a short while but it apparently under water today. I had friends in Michigan that showed up at one of our club meetings with a small handful of these specimens that they personally collected while in Alabama for a race. I\'ve never personally had one before and was thrilled to get this as it is really quite fabulous. The almandine (a Garnet Group mineral) crystals really stand out on the chloritic schist and are a deep red color--typical of almandine. There are crystals on both side of the plate and the piece is quite sizeable. Additional crystals lay within and careful preparation with a dental pick, etc. might expose additional crystals on the piece. I would leave it as it is and be more than content with this choice display piece from a locality lacking in most collections!
