Here we have a circa 1888-89, 39 star flag which is all original and authentic in a wonderful state of preservation, professionally framed using only archival materials and under museum glass which reduces reflections and provides high UV protection. The flag deminsions are approximately 26 X 16 inches. The gold frame measures approximately 30X22 inches.
The star configuration is very unusual (rare) consisting of stars of 2 different sizes and being aligned in Vertical rows with the rows alternating between large stars and smaller stars.
The next oddity and probably the most eye catching is the appearance of the Blood Stripe. This effect was created by the flag maker producing stripe 8 very tiny in height compared to the other stripes. Since stripe 8 is so small,
at first glance Red stripe7 and Red stripe 9 seem to be one large Red stripe or “Blood Stripe” a term sometime found in antique flag lore where the flag’s canton is resting on a red stripe not the usual white stripe. This phenomenon is rarely seen and it commonly called the Blood Stripe supposedly indicating the flag was made when the nation was at War according to the legend.
The country’s largest antique flag dealer and flag expert stated he has only encountered both large and small stars in vertical rows (not the usual horizontal rows) on 39 Star Flags. I can assure you this flag with special stars AND the appearance of a Blood Stripe is quite rare. How many have you seen ?
The 39 star flag was never an official flag, which is an interesting story in its self, explained in many places in great detail and likely is the reason 39 Star flags are much less common today.
