17TH CENTURY Italian GILT POLYCHROME CARVED WOODEN SANTOS FIGURE OF SAINT PETER THE APOSTLE, CA 1650
This exquisite wooden sculpture of Saint Peter is a stunning example of Italian Baroque art from the 17th century. The piece features intricate polychrome detailing and gilt accents in the clothing. The quality of the carving is shown in the face and the hair of Saint Peter. We can assume this is Saint Peter because as head of the Catholic Church, he is often depicted in what are expensive robes, in this case, the textiles that he is wearing is that of a wealthy late Renaissance-Early Baroque gentleman or king-it would have been imported silk velvet with gold thread designs, not too different from that worn in the late Renaissance paintings of Agnolo Bronzino. The figure stands mounted on a modern wooden base. It is possible that this is Catalonian (area of Spain), or even more specifically Valencian, as Valencia was part of the Kingdom of Naples.
