The J.J. Newberry Company was a family owned department store business began in 1911 in Stroudburg, Pa and grew to 565 stores
before being sold to the McCrory store chain in the 1960\'s. Theearlier store signs included the founder\'s initials (J. J.), which were
dropped from later store signs.The gold serif lettering ison their familiar red background with two silver/mirrored bands.It measures
51\" x 12 1/4\" o/a with a strong gold color frame. Many of their stores were found in small towns. The last one hung on until 2001.
In memoriam to the closing of the J.J. Newberry store in Franklin, NH, poet Donald Hall penned this tribute:
\"Beans and Franks\"
When Newberry\'s closed in Franklin, NH - homely lime font on Main Street,
among the closed store fronts of this mill town depressed since nineteen twenty-nine;
with it\'s lunch counterfor beans and franks and coleslaw: with its bins of peanuts, counters of acrylic,
hair nets, underwear, workshirts, marbled notebooks, Bic pens, plastic toys and cheap sneakers;
where Marjorie worked ten tears at the iron cash register, Alcioffere Monbouquet pushed a broom at night,
and Mr. Smithmanaged - we learned that a man from Beverly Hills owned, who never saw the streets of Franklin, New Hampshire
and drew with a well groomed hand a line through \"Franklin, New Hampshire\".
That says it all!
