Four veiled figures, females and males, sit atop pillows in the shadow of a crenellated tower of arched painted windows on this pair of Orientalist-style antique candlesticks. They are 6 1/4 inches tall by 5 1/2 inches in diameter.
They were created by P.M. and copyrighted in 1917-- American interpretations of the Arab world that so fascinated American artists who traveled to cities like Algiers to capture on canvas and in sculpture the people and culture what was then considered the Orient around the turn of the 20th Century.
One candlestick is marked with the copyright and both are pencil-signed 124P. They are in excellent condition and take 1 1/2 inch candles, the taller the more elegant.
Very hefty, the candlesticks are painted metal over ceramic or possibly molded plaster and very nicely detailed. Blue six-pointed stars and gold Xs decorate strapping between the figures, curled feet feature stars and a scalloped aquamarine apron is trimmed in gold. Windows and figures are detailed in orange and window panes are blue. White under feet is glue residue from felt furniture pads.
