American Revolution 1778 Hessian Blood Dollar UNIQUE Error
This is a very scarce Hessian coin dated 1778 from Hesse-Cassel. It is often known as\"blood thaler\" and \"blood dollar.\" It is always exciting to find one. BUT we have one-of-a-kind (unique) piece here with a double-struck (over-struck?) error. I took a side by sidecomparison photo for you (see photo with two reverses...you are buying only the error coinhere). Can you imagine this mind-boggling piece shown around Hessian soldiers in theircamps and barracks?
This is a silver dollar sized coin with nice ornamental edge.Our error piece measures about 36mm and weighs 23.46g.OUR PIECE IS A MAJOR FIND AND THAT\'S NO PUFFERY!
George III was well connected with Frederick II (1760 to 1785) of Hesse-Cassel (see photo,not part of sale, illustration purpose only), as Freddy married Princess Mary, daughter ofGeorge II. Furthermore, George I was from the Holy Roman Empire (Germany). In otherwords, many kings and queens, and princes and princesses, were all related. When yourrelative asks you a favor, say the king of England, you kinda go along with his wishes.Freddy had done exactly that, not out of loyalty but for money. Freddy the Rex was a realgreedy bastard. He makes millions out of this deal and sends his army to the colonies in1776. Freddy says, \"Let\'s authorize a special coinage for this happy occassion.\" He coins asmall mintage of these talers. He uses this special coinage to pay new recruits \"as a bountyfor signing up to serve in the British colonial army.\"
In June 1958 issue of the \"Numismatist,\" Dolnick writes that \"thaler coin of Frederick II isseldom offered in numismatic sales,\" and he is \"reasonably certain\" the coins in his collection\"were carried by Hessian soldiers who fought on the American continent.\"
