From a Boston area estate sale (a family of British expats).
Offered is a rare and unique antique hardwood plumber’s turnpin, most likely made from lignumvitae wood which was popular in the United Kingdom in the 19th century. It stands 4-1/4” high witha base diameter of 2-7/8” and a weight of 6.6 oz. Very, very old.
Hardwood turnpins were used by plumbers many years ago for opening up the ends of lead pipes. They fell out of use once lead (a soft metal) was no longer used. This turnpin could now be used as aninteresting paperweight or part of a collection of treen:-)
Condition: Wood has split but since this is very hard wood the split hasn’t gone through. Patinais untouched. It is as found.
Final sale. Thanks for looking and please check out my other sales!
