Antique Egyptian Revival Bronze Engraved Grand Tour Tazza Agate Scarabs c1880:
$425.00

A unique estate find! This is an antique Egyptian Revival tazza, I believe made of bronze, that features floral engraved designs amongst 8 winged agate scarabs. My guess is this was a souvenir item picked up during a Grand Tour visit sometime in the Victorian era 1880s-1890's, by a wealthy traveler to Paris. The style is Victorian Aesthetic Egyptian Revival. Perhaps used as a calling card receptacle, or a compote? Or laid out just as a magnificent table centerpiece, as I have done in some of my pictures of this item.

In terms of its origins, I see Grand Tour Tazzas that are identified as French that have similar base construction.

It has a twisted rope design along the outside and inner rim.The pedestal is really not visible under the low 3 1/2" rim. The piece in total is 12" across. The base is 4 3/4". The inner bowl is about 7 1/2" in diameter. There are no dents to the rim of the bowl or the bowl part itself; there are some marks of use and scratches inside the bowl and in various areas.

The scarabs each are in overall great shape considering their antique age, and possess all their wings, legs,  and agate bodies intact. They appear to have been repaired or fixed over time to the bowl itself. Underneath I see evidence of work, previous holes, and some of the scarabs are glued, others twist in their holes. Yet, given that the wings of the scarab are a perfect match to the item, and they fit perfectly in the engraved floral design - this leads me to believe they are original and not a later addition. I am wondering if the white residue is left-over cleaning elements, or whether it is glue. The bolted base pedestal does not have any dents; it has green colors around it that I can't tell if they were intentional as in painted, or whether it is from cleaning over the years.

I have attached as many pictures as possible, in different lighting and backgrounds and level of detail. Should you wish more, please just message me.
