A large antique leather photo album commemorating the German National Shooting Festival, held 4-14 July 1890. With 23 Victorian-era albumen prints. 21 photos of a festival parade with military displays, celebrities, and floats (including two made to look like ships and one like a medieval castle). One portrait and 1 group picture on the first two pages. Gilded edges to the text block.
The front cover reads “Zur grinnerung an das 10 Deutsche Bundes-Schiessen in Berlin 4 bis zum 14 Juli 1890” (To commemorate the 10th German National Shooting [Festival] in Berlin, 4 to 14 July 1890).
The album measures 14-1/2 x 11-1/4 x 3 inches and weighs 10 lbs 6.25 oz. The parade photos and the group photo measure 8 x 5-1/2 inches. The portrait measures 5-1/4 x 3-3/4 inches.
In good to fair condition. I say “fair” because the cover’s exterior is very worn. The leather is disintegrating in places, and it is worn to the wood boards on the corners and some of the edges. The leather on the back cover is loose from the board. The cotton and and muslin padding are in place but very worn, as well. The brass lock is missing one side. The binding is still intact, however. All pages are in place and pages are able to be turned from the binding, from the front to the back. Photos are sharp and not faded. Photos are secure in their thick gray color mat pages. There are a couple foxing spots on the paper of pages, but not very many at all. Otherwise, pages are clean. See images for details.
A very rare piece! Although the cover is in bad shape, the interior is well-preserved.
