Interesting bookends depicting a seated Arab scholar, wearing robe and turban, reading an open book. Could this be Lawrence of Arabia? I do not find these in any of the reference books or on-line collections.
These are unusual for several reasons. Firstly, the figure itself seems to be grey metal (a magnet does not stick) while the base is cast iron (a magnet DOES stick), the 2 pieces secured by 4 screws in the bottom. Secondly, I found a number - difficult to read but it looks like 380.B - stamped into the bottoms, hidden by the felts. Most companies put their stock numbers somewhere on the back or the base where it would be visible.
The only companies I know who made 2 piece constructions with spelter figure and iron base were Judd and Bradley Hubbard. Both companies also marked their pieces with stock numbers, usually on the backs but sometimes under or even inside (I know of at least one BH set where you have to remove the back plate to find the BH mark). And Judd, I know, occasionally used A and B designations, though usually when the set comprised two pieces whichwere complementary but not identical (say, one male, one female). Ronson is another possibility, based on the quality of the pieces.
So, while I\'m not yet able to identify the specific manufacturer, it is clear these are the work of one of the better foundries as the casting is sharp, detailed and high quality. I would guess 1930\'s.
Condition is excellent, no damage to the structures, just some scrapes and scuffs and discoloration to the bases, and the bronze-colored finish on the figures has only a few instances of wear, mostly at the back of the shoulders where these have been in contact with books for many years. The figures sit tight and secure on their bases, and felts certainly are old, I will dare to say original.
5 1/4 inches tall; base is 4 1/2 X 2 3/4 inches. And surprisingly heavy at 3 pounds EACH PIECE.
