Antique Mettlach V&B Rockwood Series Beer Stein #2790/6135 Man w/Glass c.1902

Description: Beautiful antique German beer stein made the the most famous firm of Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach.

It was created by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach in 1902. The stein was a part of the "Rockwood" series that Mettlach artists modeled on the popular at the time American hand-painted dark-brown ceramics wares made by the Rockwood factory in Cincinnatti, Ohio. This is one and only time the most famous and old German manufacturer was trying to imitate American-made craftwork.

The series are quite rare in the US where the most popular imports were etched steins. The steins in Rockwood series were hand-painted over transfer outline and color-sprayed with atomizers to create this rich shading.

This stein is decorated with a picture of a smiling man holding a pilsener glass in his hand. The majority of the Mettlach "Rockwood-type" beer steins were decorated with the copies of Dutch Golden Age of painting (mostly Frans Hals) featuring Dutch gentlemen drinking. It looks like this gentleman came from one of Frans Hals painting.

Marked with underglazed stamped Mettlach Mercury mark, 6135 decoration number, and also impressed 2790 model number along with impressed 34 - quality control number - and "02" for the year of production 1902.

The stein is in excellent condition, there is no chips or cracks, the pewter may need some cleaning but there is no dents or dings, the lid is sitting very tight. Great stein in excellent condition - 6.5" tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity.

Reference#:   Condition: Excellent Year: c.1902 Country: Germany Maker: Mettlach Height: 6.5 in Materials: Pottery
