An exciting find!Unique Early Pennsylvania Applique Album Quilt. This quilt is from the Ephrata area of Lancaster County, PA. I\'ve never seen this exact pattern before. Four large blocks, each measuring 29\" x 33\" with a star center, oak leaf and feather appliques using yellow, turkey red and overdyed green calicos! There are hearts, stars and clovers quilted into the ground of the blocks! Straight line quilting forming triangles on the borders.Quilting is 7-8 SPIBatting is thin cottonBacking is a brown print and hand bound back to frontFabrics are early tiny calico, see Trestain\'s guide to fabrics. Estimating this dates to1840-1860, (possibly earlier).
Condition is very good overall, and fabrics are sturdy. Small flaws throughout commensurate with age as follows:
There is a small pea size hole in one of the blocks, does not go through, staining spots on a few areas of the front (as seen in pictures) which isn\'t drastic but shows due to the light fabrics. Some minor split and edge wear in a few areas of the binding, but not all, and the majority is fine. Back has a couple small areas of dye lift and a small tear (shown) and a couple small splits at stitching lines (2 inch). Slight bit of pin head size popping in just a few tiny areas of the red (black overdye), and slight overall fade on the yellow sashing. (see last two pictures) Not all small flaws shown due to picture limits but contact me for more pictures if you\'d like to see.
